Does Cold Calling Still Work

Cold calling is arguably the most notorious form of marketing, and one which seems to affect everybody, whether they try to avoid it or not. Most people, when confronted with a salesperson in an unsolicited phone-call, would choose to end the conversation as quickly as possible, either by being rude, hanging up the phone, or politely declining to continue the conversation. Very rarely do people actually respond positively to cold calls, so why then are they still undertaken on the industrial scale that we see everyday?

This is actually quite a difficult question to answer, as there can be a quite a bit of difference in how cold-calling works. The old style of cold calling, whereby salespeople would go through the phone-book contacting anyone and everyone on the list, has been proven nearly totally ineffective. On the flip-side, cold calling that is currently going on often comes from an informed place. It could be that you’ve filled in a survey at some point with your information, or that you made a comment on your facebook page about how you need a cleaner; these facts can be picked up machines and then transmitted to a sales team to initiate a sale. Even so, this is often not a welcome thing, and can still be pretty ineffective. Even if you look at the best tactics with cold calling, the results are often worse than most other types of marketing.
